Timberwolf 13/75G - History

The TW 13/75G began life in March 2000 as the 12/75. The concept was to create a chipper with a minimum 10 year working life within the hire industry (being one of the most arduous environments to which plant equipment be deployed and where only the toughest machines will survive), offering a level of performance that would ensure the machine was repeat hired.

To meet this objective, it was obvious to us that we must look to the methods used in the building of our larger chippers rather than the industry standard of normal mass production of machines of this size. Our design department gave us an early warning that if we really wanted a chipper this small to be strong enough for 10+ years of hard work, then it was never going to be light.

As with all good machinery the difference is in the detail; here are just a few details that help create this impressive little workhorse:

  • The whole machine is fabricated rather than formed from pieces of pressed steel. Pressing steel into shape produces a formed component in seconds and is therefore cheaper than fabrication, but requires that the steel be relatively thin for the machine to be able to press it. The TW 13/75G must be fabricated by hand because of the thickness of material used throughout the machine.
  • The rotor is made from solid steel and is attached to a 40mm solid steel shaft capable of taking many times the cutting forces generated by the 13hp Honda engine.
  • The shaft runs in 2 industrial sized bearings, again over specified for the work they will be doing.

The shaft is not attached directly to the crankshaft of the engine but uses 2 belts running in parallel. The belts are not only used to prevent shock loading but by slowing the rotor down we are able to increase rotor torque for enhanced chipping performance

Working with the TW 13/75G

This is a superb mini chipper that is far more capable than its size suggests. The TW 13/75G is a commercial chipper, designed to work all day, every day.

The feed funnel is also used as the handles for moving the chipper around; simply tilt the machine backwards and the legs lift off the ground allowing the machine to be wheeled around. Because the funnel effectively acts as a lever, the weight of the machine is ‘disguised’ and a single operator can easily move the machine around on site.

The engine is a 13hp recoil start Honda. This engine is ideally matched to the chipping rotor and starting the chipper involves a slow, strong pull on the recoil starter.

As with all chippers the material has to be cut to suit the machine, but the big difference with the TW 13/75G is that material requires far less trimming than ANY comparable machine. This chipper has a very strong self feed action produced by the positive blade feed incorporated in the feed funnel and blade design. This feed action is strong enough to break forks in branches up to 50mm (2”) in diameter. This means that the operator does not have to make hundreds of cuts to get the pieces small enough to fit into the chipper! The TW 13/75G is capable of processing over 1/3 tonne per hour (depending on type of material) and can process material quicker than the operator can load it!

On the back of the rotor are 4 aerodynamic fans that create positive air pressure within the rotor housing, enabling the TW 13/75G to handle extremely leafy or wet material without blocking, resulting in superb performance regardless of the weather, season or material being processed!

Unlike most machines of this size, the TW 13/75G ejects material at just over knee height instead of straight onto the ground. This gives 2 advantages:

  • The machine does not have to be constantly moved around the work site to avoid the discharge becoming blocked. The TW 13/75G can chip over 1 ½ tones before you need to move it!
  • The discharge is adjustable and chips can be directed onto the ground or straight into a garden trailer.

One of the most surprising things about the TW 13/75G is that all of the chipping performance comes from 1 blade! Mind you, it’s not just any old blade; the 176mm (7”) blade is made from a special Swedish steel that has been developed specifically for large scale commercial chipping. The blade is extremely tough without being brittle and can process many tonnes of material before it needs sharpening. With around 10mm of sharpening scope it can be sharpened repeatedly until the wear limit is reached.

Access to the blade is easy and with the removal of one bolt the whole top section of the rotor housing flips open to reveal the blade. The blade is retained by 5 torx screws and the whole blade changing process takes just 10 minutes.

If you are engaged in one or more of the following, the TW 13/75G is worth serious consideration:

  • Hire operation – This is a key piece of hire equipment. Chippers and shredders are notoriously difficult machines to successfully hire because of their complexity, size, lack of performance vs customer expectation, tendency to block (requiring a call out) and repair bills! This chipper sweeps all of that aside and not only can it be reliably hired but customers love it. The TW 13/75G soon becomes a great piece of equipment that repeat hires!
  • Landscaper – With the ability to access tight areas, this chipper is ideal for moving along narrow domestic passageways and into the back garden. Once there, the TW 13/75G will work at a rate that gets the job done quickly and efficiently.
  • Parks ground manager – The TW 13/75G is easy to move around and a great tool for all that hedging work!
  • Private user with a large garden – If you have already had the bad experience of buying a large domestic shredder and finding it cumbersome, slow and frankly frustrating, then the TW 13/75 is the way forward. Whether you purchase or hire there will be no looking back with a TW 13/75G!
